I saw an interesting exchange on a crowded subway train yesterday that taught me a lesson. A large man was blocking one-half of the subway door on the D Train and didn't move to let people out or in at the West 4th Street station. The gentleman entering the train behind me said said to him as he passed, "Excuse me, sir, you're blocking the doorway - but then you already know that, don't you?"
I saw the man's eyes flash with anger toward the speaker and then the speaker did something I found extraordinary. He did NOTHING! He didn't even meet the man's eyes but waited patiently as the train moved uptown.
When the train reached the 34th Street station, the man blocking the door this time turned sideways to let people out and some people in. When the train reached 42nd Street, the man again turned sideways to let people out and then sat down in the seat right next to the door that had become available.
I learned:
Don't be afraid to speak up when we see something wrong;
Speak kindly, because how we say something is often more important than what we say;
Don't speak to anyone with hostility in your eyes and your voice; and
We can be helpful by being respectful.
